Questions & Answers

  • A few of us around the world have attempted TM38s on liter Beemers. Out of the box they are too rich. Also prone to bowl overflow (apparently sensitive to tilt in certain applications). I experience persistent bowl overflow despite adjustments to the float arm. I am ordering a metal tip and seat assy and hope that solves that problem. I was unable to adjust the idle circuit until I reduced the pilot jet from 22.5 to 15. I still get less than 30mpg and wonder if you have any guidance regarding needle and needle jet combos (I've tried Q2 and O8 and all 4 needles so far). My comrades insist I switch to Dells, but I won't give up...yet. TM38-86/44mm Thank you

Too rich is probably easy to resolve, but overflow might be a problem. I have installed TM40s on a R100, without overflow issue, but the angle in general is a bit more than typical. I somewhat doubt metal tips will be a solution, but could be. I think I would over adjust the float, and then try to walk it in.

Every situation and carburetor size/type, configuration will be different, but in the past, with VM type carbs, we ended up with P2 needle jets. I suspect the needle jet circuit is too rich, and could be some of the reason for poor MPG.

15 pilot jet seems about right. I think that's what I had in the TM40s.

  • I have the TM32-1with a billet intake from Performance 670. It's installed on a Predator 670 (Honda GX670 clone 24hp). It's on a GoDevil Mud Motor, and fed with the OEM Mikuni/Brigs vacuum fuel pump #808492. I bought this whole set up used, and the guy who had it before messed with the Mikuni and it is dumping fuel past the needle and seat and filling the crank case with fuel. I took the Mikuni apart and noticed the needle and seat are HUGE compared to other small engine carbs I've seen! I just want the factory needle and seat but I don't have anything to reference for part number or size. May you please direct me to which needle and seat would be optimum for my set up? Thanks in advance, Respectfully, LQ

The TM32-1 comes from the factory with a 786-46001 series 3.3 needle & seat. 3.3 is fine for gravity feed, but you will need a smaller size for use with a pump. 1.5 thru 2.0 are suitable for use with pumps. While it is hard to say for sure, I would lean towards the 1.8, or 2.0.

  • I have identified my carb as a TM 38-86, however I am not certain which needle and seat is appropriate. The carbs are on an old BMW airhead (gravity feed). Thanks

We typically use the 3.3 for similar applications.
