• I am interested in installing this on a 1998 xr400. do you know if the stock cables will fit or do you offer a kit to install on the xr400?

• I have heard that this will work as a direct replacement for a 1982 Honda XL500R.
  Will the jets that come with it be pretty close or should I grab a couple bigger ones? The only mod it has is exhaust.
  Also, will the OEM cables work with this carb (I just replaced them)? Thanks!

  That is un-chartered territory for us, so I don't have much info for you. I THINK the carb will fit the stock manifold. Might be a tight squeeze, but I think it will fit. If the XT500R is running push/pull cables, they could work. I'd say a pretty good chance. If they are long enough, but arent exactly correct, you can likely modify them. As far as jetting goes.. I would probably star with a 135 main, a 25 pilot, and the smallest accelerator pump nozzle (TM36/43-A). Again, no real world experience on this conversion with that bike, but I think my suggestions are a decent place to start.

  We have not done much testing with this carb on an SR500. We have received some feedback from past customers that had some success running a 160 main and a 15 pilot jet. Aside from that, I dont have much information to go by. Having setup some other similar displacement, single cylinder bikes using this carb, it would seem there should be a reduction in the accelerator pump nozzle size, or at least a delayed activation of it, which is adjustable on the carb.
  
  We do offer a VM36 for the Yamaha 500s, which has a great track record of being almost spot on straight out of the box for a stock, to lightly modified bike.

• When using this on a 78 sr500 can i use the stock air box side and cylinder side connection boots and the stock throttle cables ? Do i still run the vacuum line from the carb to the fuel petcock?
  

  We haven't yet developed a carburetor kit for the SR500, thought may be in the works this year. This carb would be an excellent choice for the SR, but you would need to determine if the carburetor will fit in the same space as the original carb; if the engine-side spigot would fit (42mm), if the air box boot would fit the intake bell (54mm); and if the same cables could be used. If the engine side spigot is not the same, perhaps another Mikuni manifold adapter can be used:

  You would also need to determine what jetting would work best for your bike. I have attached a link for an article showing how to tune and jet a Mikuni carb below. This is what we do when we build a kit for a bike. You may be able to find jetting specs on one of the user groups. I'm sure someone has used this carb on a SR500, a TT500, or XT500.

  There is no provision for a vacuum port on this carb, so you could not draw vacuum from the carb, but you may be able to add a vacuum nipple to the intake manifold, or turn the petcock on manually.

  We are not sure which part you are referring to. The TM36-68 that I have in my hand does not have a long brass piece around the pump rod.   UPDATE: The brass tube that covers the pump rod on the TM36-68 is pressed into the body of the carburetor, and is not replaceable. The part itself is not offered by Mikuni.

  Unlike the very similar TM40-6, the TM36-68 does not have a vacuum take off port. Depending on what model bike you are working with, there may be other ways to accomplish what you need. Let us know what you are working with, and we will check for a possible solution.
