Description

Details

Our Honda XR650R kit includes a pre-jetted Mikuni TM40-6 pumper carb with pre-installed, CNC machined, spigot and filter side adapters, custom push/pull throttle cables intended for use with the stock throttle assembly, fine tuning jets, remote coke cable and choke knob bracket as shown. Everything is included to mount this carb to your bike. This kit is well suited for stock and mildly modified engines.  The remote choke can be used on any bike, but is particularly useful when the bike has had a larger aftermarket fuel tank installed.  The remote choke allows for easy access to the choke knob when the carburetors cannot be directly reached.  A more powerful, easier to start XR650R... What more could you want?

  • Easy installation
  • Pre-Jetted with genuine Mikuni components
  • High quality cables.  Stainless inner wire, with Teflon coated casing
  • Our signature Red anodized CNC adapters pre-installed - Made in-house.
  • Remote Choke and bracket

We offer these kits with an on-body choke assembly, or with remote choke setup.  Aftermarket, larger capacity fuel tanks may require the use of a remote choke.  This particular item is with the remote choke setup.

Carburetor Adaptor Dimensions: 49mm intake spigot OD, 64mm intake bell OD (both are same as factory sizing)

Note: While similar, the adapters for this kit will not fit an XR650L (NC650L, NCS650LB)

No more fussy hot stars or floods

Installation was relatively simple. Had to cut some eubber shims to slide inbetween the gas tank (stock tank) and backbone to keep tank from rubbing against pumper linkage. Running a full Big Gun exhaust, uncorked setup. Bottom end is much sharper, and throttle response is much quicker. Best part in my opinion is how much less flood prone this carb is on hot starts. Hot starts are no longer an exercise is endurance and profanity. That alone makes it a winner in my book, all other attributes just sweeten the deal

Replace the stock carb on my uncorked xr650r with the mikuni tm40. Easy install was jetted properly for my application. Only hung that would have been a little helpful is some basic instructions on fuel line placement and cable adjustment. Overall very happy with the mikuni, revs quicker and smoother than stock while delivering a noticeable power increase

Good stuff. Been fighting my stock carb for years. Who knew a 650r could run so good! All I did was drop the main 3 sizes to a 140 and turned in the fuel screw. Then used phone to shoot vid of squirt once mounted up. Set it to just miss the slide and stop at 3/4 throttle.
RUNS TERRIFIC! Thanks!!!! Only thing I would change is that fuel tubing LOL no biggie there.
I am at 4200feet. I may be a lil rich once it warms up more but major improvements and worth every penny if it holds up for many dirt miles!

The bike runs really well. Especially the bottom end improved a lot. The kit really is Bolt-on, and everything fits perfect. Together with a slip on pipe this is one of the best mods I have done to the bike.

Questions & Answers

  • Will this fit a XR650L ?

We don't have any first hand experience using our 650R kit on a L model. The carburetor should fit, but you may have issues with the cables. I believe you will need to adjust the jetting as well, but we do not have enough information on hand to make any real suggestions.

Answer by: Web Support (Admin) on Jul 27, 2015 12:47:00 PM

As an update to the answer provided in 2015, we now offer a similar kit for the XR650L. This kit has different jetting and cables from the XR650R, but uses the same TM40-6 pumper carb. Please see the link below:

  • Looking for a 'pumper carb' for my 2004 XR650R. I'm from Ontario, Canada and will be running the bike under 1000' elevation. The bike is slightly un-corked (exhaust baffle opened and air intake mod with K&N air filter). Curious about your choice of jetting - do you recommend a different setting for my location? I'm looking to purchase immediately. Also I have the larger Acerbis fuel-tank, and I believe I need the remote 'choke' location. Much appreciated. Brad Jackson(Toronto)

I think the jetting will be pretty much spot on, straight out of the box. Very seldom is there a jetting issue with our kit at or around sea level, on a close to stock bike. We include a few extra pilots, and main just in case, but I don't think you will need to dig into the carb. With a larger tank, your best bet would be to go with the remote choke. We sell about three times as many remote choke kits, compared to the body choke. Customers tend to lean towards the remote choke even with stock tanks.

  • What jets, needle etc are fitted when shipped?

We are currently jetting the carb with a 147.5 main jet, 22.5 pilot jet, Y-6 needle jet, and 9DJY01 needle.

Answer by: NCS (Admin) on May 12, 2015 11:58:00 AM
  • Is it possible to put a longer choke cable on to route to the handlebars? Also does this use the factory idle adjuster?

Yes, it is possible, but its not something we offer at this time. You can use most OEM and aftermarket choke cables, and levers. This carb does not use the factory XR650R idle adjust.

Answer by: Web Support (Admin) on Nov 5, 2018 12:59:00 PM
  • Will the stock cables work? I purchased 3" longer cables for the stock carb and would like to use these. My order is arriving tomorrow and if you ship stock length and mine will not work I may need to return your cables for a longer set.

Our included cables are about 2.5" longer than stock. I think they will work fine, but let us know if you need the longer ones.

Answer by: Web Support (Admin) on Oct 21, 2015 10:21:00 AM
  • Hi, most of my riding is in the 2600 feet to 3600 feet range. Will your pre-set jetting work for this elevation. Bike is also uncorked with full race ehaust setup.

The jetting that we install in the carb should be ok for that altitude, but we do include a few extra tuning jets in case you need to lean it out a bit more. While there is no way to guarantee it will be dead on right out of the box, I would say there is a very good chance that you will not have to mess with it at all.

Answer by: Web Support (Admin) on Apr 2, 2018 10:34:00 AM
  • Can you supply this kit with oversized throttle cables?

Yes we can. We have cables that are approx. 5.5" longer . There is no extra charge for the longer cables.

  • Does NCS238 come with fuel vent hoses, fuel line, etc.?

This kit comes with everything pictured in the listing - including the fuel line and fuel vent hoses. I have attached a link to the listing below:

  • Read other answered questions but if i have full exhaust with opened up air box will the provided sizes be enough to jet correctly once recieved? Or would i have ro order beyond the "standard" kit?

With how we jet them, and the extra included jetting, you should be fine with our off the shelf kit. You would need extensive performance modifications to be outside of our included jetting range.

Answer by: Web Support (Admin) on Feb 26, 2018 10:27:00 AM
  • Will the stock jets (the ones that come with the carb) work OK at elevation? I usually ride between 5,000 and 8,000 feet.

The higher you go, the more dense the altitude becomes. So you want a leaner mixture. To do this, you want to install slightly smaller jets - (pilot jet for idle, while the main jet if primarily for the top 25-percent of your rpm range). To make your mid-range leaner, you can raise the clip on your needle jet one stop which will drop you needle slightly, leaning the mid-range mixture.
But, you should always begin with the jetting we ship installed in the carb. Once you get it running you should preform tests with with new spark plugs to determine the color of the spark plug insulator (on the bottom of the plug inside the engine). These tests are described in this Mikuni tuning and jetting manual:
    http://www.vintagebikebuilder.com/mikuni-tuning-and-jetting-guide.html
We provide some smaller jets, which should be adequate for your needs. But you should really read to manual to understand the testing method before you start swapping jets.

  • Hello, is it possible to order this carb with the 1.2 air jet instead of the 1.1? If so, will there be an extra charge?

We supply the kit with a plugged "0" air jet. Because we sell so many, we pre-build these kits and do not offer customized orders. However, we will be happy to sell you the 1.2 air jet which can be easily installed by you in a matter of seconds with just a small flat blade screwdriver.

The 1.2 air jet is listed at $4.95. However, we strongly suggest you try it the carb first without changing the air jet. We've have great success with this kit as it is.

Here is a link to the air jet on our website:

  • Hi, I have installed this carb out of the box. It runs great but does not want to idle for very long. Idle is a little better when fully hot, but still stalls after 5-10 seconds. Does this mean I need a larger pilot jet?

As with most performance carbs, the bike needs to be fully warmed up before it idles smoothly at the correct speed. These carbs are not delivered with the idle adjusted. This is something you need to do yourself. If you find the idle is always too low, whether warm or cold, you will want to turn your idle adjustment clockwise until you raise the idle to where you want it.
I don't think your idle problem has anything to do with your pilot as we have been selling this kit for years we know the pilot is correct. You may be getting too much air or too little fuel into the carb.
It's possible you may be experiencing an air leak at the manifold or you may have something blocking your fuel flow.
There are several things I suggest you check. First reseat the carb into the rubber manifold, flange adapter. Make sure it is bottomed out all around. Make sure your manifold clamp is tight. If it can't be tightened without slipping, replace the clamp.
Next, I would check the condition of your fuel. Drain the contents of your float bowl into a small glass jar. Let it settle for several minutes. If you see any specs of dirt floating around in the fuel, you may have some debris blocking the pilot circuit. If this is the case (which is real common on dirt bikes), clean and rinse your fuel tank, install new fuel and new in-line fuel filters. You will also need to clean any debris from the carb.
You may also check your air filter. If it is dirty, it will restrict air flow and keep your bike from idling.
If you run though these procedures, you should solve your issue.

  • I see you are fitting this carb kit with a 147.5 main jet, 22.5 pilot jet, Y-6 needle jet, and 9DJY01 needle. What other pilot jets and main jets do you include with this kit? Thank you.

We provide an additional 25 pilot jet as well as a 140, 142.5 and 150 main jet.

Answer by: rick c (Admin) on Aug 29, 2017 10:18:00 AM
  • Would like this carb kit with the longer cables but see no options for online orders

We have not made them an available online option, because the longer cables are causing some problems. They are too long for most applications. The included cables are already about 2.5" longer than stock, which seems to be adequate for almost all scenarios with these bikes. The longer cables that we have are 8" longer than stock, 5.5" longer than the included cables. If that is something that you would still like to go with, we can modify your order once its placed. Just let us know thats what you want to do.

Answer by: Web Support (Admin) on Oct 21, 2015 10:19:00 AM
  • Are extended length throttle cables available, I have tall bars and risers?
Any pics of the external choke setup mounted on a bike?

We dot offer an extended cable set for the XR650R, but because of the carburetor configuration, the cables end up being about 1-1/2 longer than stock. We've sold dozens of these kits and never had an issue with the cables being too short. I'm sure some of those folks are using risers too.
Unfortunately, we do not have any pictures of the external choke set up on the bike.
