Description

Details

This Honda XR400R 36mm Mikuni carburetor kit is the most significant bolt on performance modification you can provide for your XR400R. The Mikuni accelerator pump equipped carburetor will not only make your XR400 much easier to start but it will also eliminate the annoying flat spot that we are sure you have noticed. Every XR400 seems to suffer from this. Jetting does not play as significant a role as with other non-accelerator pump carburetors. Each carb is pre-jetted for most applications straight out of the box.  We also include 3 additional main jet sizes, as well as 2 pilot jets as optional jetting to ensure you are covered in almost any situation.  We manufacture and install our own aluminum adapters in house for easy installation and a perfect fit.  To make the install even easier, we include a brand new push/pull throttle cables that work with the factory throttle assembly.

  • Improved cable design with increased length for proper installation with the TM36.  Installs into factory throttle assembly
  • Genuine Mikuni carburetor, and internals
  • Additional jets for performance modifications
  • Our signature Red anodized CNC adapter pre-installed - Made in-house.

We offer these kits with an on-body choke, or with remote choke setup.  Aftermarket, larger capacity fuel tanks may require the use of a remote choke.  This particular item is with the on body choke setup (pull knob located on carb body).

Ordered this product shipped fast. I had to pay 40 dollars for shipping but I live in Canada. Which isn't to bad. Removed the old carb I had to remove the rear shock to install the carb. Jetting was off with the ones that came in the carb which I think was a 127 main and a 12.5 pilot jet. So I went with 130 main and 15 pilot jet. Still needs a little fine turning once I go for a ride. Throttle cables were a perfect fit with bar raisers on my bike. Only thing I don't like with this product is the size of the intake boot is a little big so clamping the carb is on its max setting. Thanks again niche Cycle.

I got my kit yesterday, and installed it today. My bike started on the first kick and runs great. Acceleration has greatly improved and the ease of starting is priceless. I am really happy with this purchase. I will never get rid of this bike.

Carburetor jetting was spot on. I had the whole thing installed and running in less than an hour. I did run into a problem with the supplied cables being too short, but niche took care of it right away, and sent me a brand new set. I cannot recommend this kit enough. If you arent completely happy with how your XR performs, give this a shot. You will not be disappointed.

Questions & Answers

  • I live in Colorado and ride between 5000-8500 feet. Will you guys have it setup so I'll I need to bolt it on? or will I have to take it apart and swap out jets?

If you give us a heads up on the purchase, we can jet it a little leaner for you. There is still a chance that you will have to do some tuning on your own. We have a chart that will get it pretty close with the elevation change from sea level, but there are too many factors that come into play to guarantee anything.

  • Hello,
I have an 04 XR4 with Gordon mods, no engine mods, at 1600ft. Could you jet and set up the carb as best you can for my application so I have to mess with it as little as possible after I bolt it on? Would you do that for me, please?
I’m pretty handy but have next to no experience with jetting and tuning, I just want to ride.
    Thanks,
    Ray.

It should run very well straight out of the box, with little adjustment needed just as it comes from us. In other words, our typical off the shelf kit should suit you nicely.

  • I have a fmf Powercore 4 with a full pipe, with stock air filter and no other mods. I ride around 1700-3000 ft elevation, should I be okay with out of the box jetting?

It will be very close, but there is no way for us to say for sure. Lots of factors come into play. Extra jetting is included for fine tuning.

  • On your Mikuni pumper carb for the xr400r 2003 what are the jet sizes already in the carb, thanks.

Currently we are setting up the carb with a 127.5 main jet, 12.5 pilot, 35 pump nozzle, P4 Needle jet, and a 9DZH6-50 needle.

  • I live in Southern California. This will come preset with the correct jetting installed? Am I correct to assume all I would have to do is install the carb right out of the box?

We pre-jet these kits to work on stock motorcycles at sea-level. But we also include a range of jetting with each carburetor. Customers are frequently able to bolt the carb on and go riding. However, if you ride at a high elevation, or have made performance modifications to your bike, you might need to adjust the jetting a bit to get the most out of the carburetor. We've sold hundreds of satisfied customers this kit and I'm sure you'll love it too!

  • Does the Mikuni TM36 pumper carb for the XR400r come with an assortment of jets for tuning? I have an 02 XR400R with an UNI air filter, snorkel removed, header pipes ground smooth and a PRO Circuit T4 Exhaust.

Yes, we pre-jet the carburetor for what we have found to be the most appropriate for the majority of bikes. Depending on your altitude, you will likely be able to run this kit without modifications. We do include a jet kit which consists of 3 additional sizes of mains, and 2 sizes of pilots for instances where additional modification to the jetting is needed.

  • How will this 36mm pumper kit work on a xr400 with a 440 kit?

That will depend on several other variables. Is there an increase in compression over stock? If so, what is the ratio? What other modifications have been done to the engine? What altitude do you ride at?

In almost any case, the carburetor will perform well out of the box, but depending on your answers to the above questions, there is a possibility that you will need to utilize some of the jet kit that we include for fine tuning.

  • Curious about the remote choke option. I'm using a Clarke tank that currently doesn't interfere with the stock carb choke lever. Any recommendations? If I order without, but then find our I need it, can the carb be modified easily? Thanks!

If you can access the stock carb easily, you should be fine with the body choke version. If down the road you decide that you would like to go remote, it is a very easy swap out.

  • I will be riding a stock 1998 XR400R at 1500-3500 feet elevation in Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky. What would be the recommended jet sizes and are those already installed?

The jetting that comes pre-installed in the carburetor might be a bit on the rich side when you start approaching 2000+ ft, on a completely stock engine. We do include a leaner main jet in the kit. The pilot circuit should be fine, but you may need to tinker with the clip position on the needle.

  • Questions:
    1) Does this setup use OEM vent hoses?
    2) What does the remote choke mount to?
    3) Do you need to be able to adjust the idle stop screw like OEM carb for cold start?
    4) Are there flooding issues if the bike is laid down?

Thanks for looking at our XR400 kit. We sell a lot of these through previous customer recommendations. This kit does not use the vent hose plumbing of the stock carb. Most people "uncork" the air boxes eliminating these hoses. You can read more about this online. You should search "Thumper Talk - uncorking XR400."
You can mount the remote choke where ever it may be convenient for you. Some people put them on a frame tab near the left side cover.
Once you set the idle screw, you shouldn't have to adjust it again - especially for cold start. The choke is the only thing you should be moving or activating on a cold start.
Any bike with a carburetor will flood when laid down. Fuel injection is somewhat better, but even bike with fuel injection can have problems restarting after a fall.

  • I have a 2004 XR400R, all stock. I know nothing about jetting. Is this my solution for the daunting bog I get when needing instant wide open throttle?. Also I will putting on a less restrictive exhaust and I have concerns about leaning it out.

Thank you for your interest in our kit. All of our kits are jetted for stock bikes, which are ridden between sea level and 3500 feet. We can't customize jetting for every combination of performance parts that may be installed on a customer's bike or for all altitudes where a customer may ride. If you end up changing your exhaust, I can provide you with a Mikuni tuning and jetting article that will show you an easy step-by-step method for determining your needed jetting. We can also help with jetting suggestions.
There are only two practical ways to achieve a nearly instant wide open throttle without an initial delay - that is either with fuel injection or by using a carburetor with an accelerator pump. The accelerator pump is the obviously the more practical (and least expensive) arrangement for the XR400R.
TheTM36 Mikuni carb used with this kit, has a flow nozzle on the accelerator pump which can be adjusted to the bike's fuel demand. Depending on the altitude you ride, you may need to adjust the jetting some and you may need to adjust the accelerator pump. Too much fuel can also cause a delay in throttle response. You may need to adjust the spray of fuel entering the mixing chamber of the carb to achieve optimal flow for your engine. This is easily done. I can give you some instruction with that if you get the kit. You can contact me at rick@nichecycle.com
