Air flows faster and smoother through the TM Series venturi due to the flat slide configuration and the jet blocks which help create a smoothbore effect. The high velocity of the air flow means a stronger vacuum at the needle jet, providing more precise metering and better throttle response.

I have a TM34 on a 1978 Yamaha DT400. It works great at 50% throttle and above. Below 25%, the engine surges. I have tried idle jet changes, needle changes, needle jet changes. Nothing helps. I even tried modifying the slide which helped a little. Now I'm wondering if it is too much carburetor and maybe I should be using the TM32. However, getting things working right is getting costly and I'd like an experienced persons opinion. Can you help?
Its pretty tough helping remotely with carburetor tuning, but we will do our best. The 34mm carb is a touch big for a bike of that nature, but its not too large enough to cause running problems. With that size carb you would sacrifice a little bit of bottom end, for more top end potential, compared to a 32mm. That said, it should still be perfectly ridable, and I dont think the size of the carb is enough reason for what you are describing.
Did you modify the slide, by removing material at the cutaway? If so, and if that helped, what you are doing is introducing more air, which tells me that your issue is too much fuel. What size pilot jet are you running? Does adjusting the air screw outward provide any improvement?Answer by: Web Support (Admin) on Feb 23, 2021 10:28:00 AM
