Questions & Answers

  • I am considering replacement of a Honda 47mm bore size/49 mm input bell size carb with your VM 44mm carb. I know I will have to probably re-jet if necessary . Is the Mikuni VM44 a good match in size since it is close to the original Honda carb. This is a dual carb setup on a Honda CX 500 requiring two carbs. Thanks.

The VM44 is much too large of a carburetor for a CX500. I would suggest something along the lines of a VM30, or VM32, but they are not going to mount straight to the engine. You will likely need custom manifolds, along with any other supporting hardware. The CX is one of the more involved carb conversions.

  • I have an 1989 arctic cat wildcat 650. The original carbs were vm 40. Original carbs are junk. Could I use these vm 44 carbs on my machine? Thanks

We don't have any fitment charts (no one does) that can tell what aftermarket carbs fit what vehicles. We typically know from experience and we don't have any experience with Arctic Cat snowmobiles. I can tell you that if you attempt to put a 44mm carb on a snowmobile that originally had a 40mm, it will be too much carburetor and will not run properly if at all. You are better off with a slightly smaller carburetor and then increasing the size of the jetting a bit. You could use your original jetting (because it is an OEM VM Mikuni with is similar).

Mikuni makes carburetors for vehicle and equipment manufacturers as well as for the general public. These public release (aftermarket) carbs are what we sell. Only manufacturers are allowed to sell parts for OEM Mikuni carbs. Frequently, the carbs are very similar, but in your case, Mikuni does not offer a 40mm aftermarket carb. There might be other differences as well. It's possible the idle screws and mixture screws may not be on the same side. And the choke may have to be adapted to fit your vehicle. But, because this is a snowmobile and it typically has more access than motorcycles, you shouldn't have a problem getting this to adapt.

Attached is a link to a 38mm snowmobile carb:

Below is a list of things you should consider before purchasing an aftermarket carb:
    1. As mentioned before, get a carb that is the closest to the size of your existing carb. Go smaller if you need to rather than bigger. Too big a carburetor will not make you vehicle faster - it will make it run worse. You will, more than likely, also have to experiment with the jetting to get your snowmobile to run optimally.
    2. Will this new carb fit? Check the dimensions (height and width) of your current carb and compare it to the dimensions in the listing. Size is important! You’ll also need to know if it will fit the manifold and air filter boot. If not, an adapters will have to be machined.
    3. Will my throttle cable work? You snowmobile currently has a MIkuni VM carburetor, so I'd say yes.
    5. Will my choke cable work? Again, because you already have a VM-style carb, I'd day yes.
