This is a very nice kit. I bought this body choke version, and installed it the day I received it. The bike runs fantastic. Its a good feeling to know its going to start on the first few kicks. Overall running performance is greatly improved. I ended up getting the parts from Niche to convert the body choke to a remote choke. Its not much of a difference, but I like it better.

Questions & Answers

  • Will this fit a XR650L ?

We don't have any first hand experience using our 650R kit on a L model. The carburetor should fit, but you may have issues with the cables. I believe you will need to adjust the jetting as well, but we do not have enough information on hand to make any real suggestions.

As an update to the answer provided in 2015, we now offer a similar kit for the XR650L. This kit has different jetting and cables from the XR650R, but uses the same TM40-6 pumper carb. Please see the link below:

  • whats extra jets come with the kit?

The additional jetting that comes with the Honda XR650r kit includes a 140, 142.5 and a 150 main jet, as well a 25 pilot jet.

  • What jets, needle etc are fitted when shipped?

We are currently jetting the carb with a 147.5 main jet, 22.5 pilot jet, Y-6 needle jet, and 9DJY01 needle.

  • I was wondering if you guys had a manual for the 40mm Mikuni pumper carb for xr650r. I haven't installed it yet but assumed there will be some fine tuning. Is that your experience or is this a relatively good to go out of the box?

Some fine tuning may be required. You will need to adjust the idle, and possibly the air mixture screw a bit. Here is a link to the manual for the carb: http://www.mikunipower.com/Manuals/HS40_Manual.pdf

  • What size pump nozzle do these carbs come with?

We use a #40 accelerator pump nozzle in our XR650R kit. The stock TM40-6 uses a #70 nozzle. These nozzles are available in 35, 40, 45, 55 and 70. Below is a link to those nozzles on our website:
    http://www.nichecycle.com/ncs/categories/carburetor/mikuni-parts-by-category/jettting-tuning/accelerator-pump-nozzle/tm36-43-accelerator-pump-nozzle-tm36-40-rs34-40-by-mikuni.html
If you ever feel your nozzle is putting out too much fuel, you can rotate the nozzle from shooting directly down the carburetor throat to banking the spray off the side of the mixing chamber. This has a similar effect to reducing the size of the jet.

  • When I go to submit an order, where I can specify jetting information? I ride mostly 6-11k ft asl, sea level jetting would be of much help here.

We pre-jet them for sea level, but we also include extra jetting for higher altitudes that you will have to swap in yourself.

Answer by: Web Support (Admin) on Dec 17, 2018 9:06:00 AM
  • Dan you buy the spare jets kit by itself? or do you have the jets for sale separately?

  • Hello, What size are the extra jets in this kit?

    Thanks
    Earl

The fine tuning extra jets are:
    Pilot: 25
    Mains: 140, 142.5 and 150

  • I have two xr650 r's . 2000 and a 2002. Both came from europe and I ride in Africa normall between 4000 to 8000 ft, but occasionally go to sea level. About three times a year. Can you set up for the euro honda's and what is the cost. Thanks.

We are not sure of any differences on Euro market XR650R. It is not something that we have dealt with in the past. We have shipped our kits all over the world, so if there were differences I have to imagine we would have heard about it by now. As for the elevation jetting, we can supply leaner jets for the altitude you ride at. When you go to sea lever, you will need to increase the size of the jetting. There is no additional cost for the change in jetting, but we cannot guarantee it will be perfect. We jet for sea lever, but can use a calculator to get it pretty close. Additional fine tuning jets will be included in case some additional adjustment is needed.

  • I have a stock 2002 xr650r. I have an IMS gas tank (4+ gallons). Are there clearance issues with a larger tank? I am also running a 2" bar riser. Is it possible to spec slightly longer cables with the kit? Where do people mount the remote choke?

We know this kit will fit on stock bikes, but we have no way of testing all the aftermarket fuel tanks on the market. But a lot of folks are running aftermarket tanks with this carb kit. You may have to install the carb with the tank off, but I don't think you'll have a problem with the carb interfering with the tank.
As far as risers go, our cables are a bit longer than stock so it should work with 2" risers.
The remote choke is an excellent choice if you're running a larger aftermarket tank. It makes operating the choke a lot easier. Some folks attach them to the side cover, some make small, 90-degree brackets that are attached the frame. I suggest you put it where it works best for you.

  • I'm seeing that there are no mods that have to be done for this carb - that it is a OEM fit. Do you think the way this is pre-jetted that it will work for an "uncorked" XR650 R that will be ridden 2300 feet above sea level?

Thanks for your question. An "uncorked" XR650 usually includes mods to both the air box and exhaust. Our carb kits come pre-jetted for stock to mildly-altered bikes. This would normally include what you have done to your bike. Your bike should run great with this carb kit in the pre-jetted configuration. However, depending or your exhaust or pipe mods, you might be able to use more fuel (larger jets) or because you ride at 2300' above sea level, it is possible you will need to lean the carb (smaller jets). Or, one may negate the other. That's why we ship this kit with a range of jetting so our customers can tune their bikes for maximum performance. If you need jets outside the range of what we include, you can bet we have what you need in stock. We carry one of the largest stocks of Mikuni parts in the US.

  • HI I purchased one of these kits from you and have been really happy with it so far! I am planning on going for a longer multi day trip soon with altitudes varying from sea level to 8000 feet, with most of the trip riding in the 4000 foot range, would you recommend swapping out jets or will I be OK on the Jetting it shipped with and just adjusting the mixture screw? if not what Jetting would you recommend?

Thanks for purchasing this kit. As you get higher, the air gets thinner. To maintain a balance, you need to limit the amount of fuel entering the fuel/air mixture. If you kept the jetting where we set it, you would have a 135 main jet installed. If you were doing most of your riding at 6000 feet for a prolonged period, you would want to drop down to a 130 main. But if you're riding at sea level, going up to 6k and returning below 3500 feet in a day, you may want to stick with what you have. As the air gets leaner, the bike may act up a little, but this is real short term thing, so you may want to leave the jetting alone. Your air/mixture screw really applies primarily to idle engine speeds, so it won't help much except at minimal throttle input. However, if your idle is stumbling, you can certainly adjust the air/mixture screw to limit the amount of fuel in the air/fuel mix. If you find your bike is beginning to act up as you're riding in the mountains, a quick fix for your mid-range would be to remove the mixing chamber cap, pull out the throttle slide and raise the clip one notch to drop the needle a bit. This will limit fuel in the mid-range slightly - which is where you will probably be doing most of your riding. When you return to riding below 3500 feet, you can easily move the needle back.

  • Hello, will this carb be a direct bolt on with no clearance issues with the stock tank? I've read that the FCRs hit the tank. I have a 2001 XR650R. Thank you

There will be no clearance issues with our TM40 kit, running a stock XR650R tank.

  • Is this a flat slide? Do you offer jetting setup for my elevation and mods?

Yes, this is a flat slide carburetor, equipped with an accelerator pump for unbeatable throttle response. We do not custom jet these, but we do pre-jet them to what we have found to work with the majority of bikes. We also include fine tuning jets for occasions where extreme altitude or extensive engine modifications come in to play.
